Project VIDA is a culturally-focused HIV/AIDS prevention and direct services community-based organization located on Chicago’s West Side. Project VIDA was founded by a consortium of volunteers in 1992 to address the unique needs and concerns of Latino and African American individuals at risk for or currently living with HIV/AIDS. We began with two co-founders distributing condoms out of a hardware store in Little Village (over 90,000 residents), then grew to have our own space, and now have two sites with dedicated and committed staff, volunteers, contractors, and Board of Directors. Project VIDA’s mission was newly revised in 2010 and is now “to improve quality of life and reduce health disparities in underserved communities by promoting self-empowerment and providing holistic health education and direct services.”

The HIV Case Management service provides medical and supportive case management to clients living with HIV/AIDS; including food, transportation, referrals, medication adherence counseling, housing assistance, etc.

The Independent Living Program (ILP) provides housing to 24 single HIV+ adults who are living longer, healthier lives as a result of the newer medication regimens, but are nonetheless in need of affordable housing with supportive services available to meet intermittent needs. Residents live in our affordable studio apartments. At the same time, they are in a supportive environment that provides on-site psychological assessment, group counseling and case management and that encourages residents to develop supportive community ties.

At each Chicago House residence, an on-site case manager helps clients obtain entitlements and benefits; arrange for home services through the City of Chicago Office of Rehabilitation Services; receive job counseling and training; and, if necessary, obtain referral to mental health services or substance abuse support groups
